Fixed term annual appointment up to a maximum term of six years

As one of the largest housing providers in England, we are responsible for managing and maintaining over 37,500 homes across the North West and East Midlands.

We provide housing for rent, for sale through schemes like shared ownership, housing for over 55’s, supported housing, and a small number of properties for market rent and outright sale. Our customers include families, young and older people in need of accommodation, and people with complex needs for whom the Group provides tailored support.

We are well placed to respond to challenges including poverty, social exclusion and homelessness, and we are committed to tackling the nation’s acute shortage of affordable housing by building more high-quality affordable homes. As a sector leader, we will also innovate and inspire, driving technology and efficiency through new products and services. We strive to be a top housing provider and an employer of choice.

Our Vision...

”We want everyone to live successfully in a home they can afford.”

Our Mission...

We will do this by making a social impact focused on: ”Creating homes. Building lives.”

About the role...

We are looking for a board member with experience of working in the public, not for profit or private sectors, preferably operating within a regulated environment. The ideal candidate will have;

  • An understanding of the needs and aspirations of our customers and wider community
  • An understanding of the external factors which influence the Group’s work, such as financial markets and political agendas
  • Well-rounded business leadership experience with demonstrable commercial acumen and a proven ability in influencing decision making
  • Relevant or specialist skills, such as commercial operations, specialist finance, investment, risk management, legal, change management, social services and/or business development, which may assist you in your role
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to focus on the key issues facing the organisation
  • The ability to foster a culture that enhances commitment, enthusiasm and excellent performance from those employees working on behalf of the Board
  • A commitment to inclusion and diversity.

The board is collectively responsible for ensuring the success of the organisation and ensuring its compliance with all legal and regulatory obligations by setting and monitoring the strategic direction of the organisation, as well as ensuring the board fulfils its trustee responsibilities.

Board members, as part of the board team, determine and uphold the organisation’s vision, mission, values, and strategies. Your ability to work well with others in a collaborative environment is a key skill and will ensure that the role is fulfilling and productive.

Terms of appointment

Payment is £10,450 per annum. Board members can also claim reasonable out of pocket expenses where applicable.

As a minimum, the board meets four times a year. Meetings are currently held virtually, they begin at 6pm and usually last between 1.5 to 2 hours. A similar time commitment will be required to participate in subsidiary boards and committees. Board members are expected to allow adequate time to prepare for meetings so that they are able to contribute and participate fully in discussion. There are also two Group strategy days, which are held in person usually in central Manchester.

Appointment is for a one year term, and members can be re-appointed to the board as long as the period of service does not exceed six years.
